Course consists of a mixture of classroom-based subjects, laboratory practicals, mandatory work placement and independent study. You will be expected to complete assignments throughout the year.
Assessment
A full Award is granted on passing the relevant eight components. You will be assessed throughout and at the end of the year.(Continuous Assessment) On successful completion of each component, you will be awarded a Pass, a Merit or a Distinction grade.
Suitability
Applicants with a passion for working with animals, a willingness to work hard and a commitment to study. You will be responsible for securing an appropriate off site work placement before the beginning of the course.
Progression
This Award can act as a gateway into the animal industry.Past students are working in animal welfare organisations (Dogs Trust); safari parks (Tayto Safari Park); as Animal Care Assistants in veterinary clinics, pet stores, kennels, stables and in Dublin Zoo. Level 6 is directed more at employment/setting up your own business etc. whereas level 5 is the primary CAO progression route. However, Dundalk IT will accept results from Animal Science Levels 5 & 6 combined as an entry requirement into Vet Nursing. Letterkenny IT will accept Animal Science Level 6 for Advanced Entry into year 2 of their Vet Nursing degree should places be available.

- Interview. You will be required to write a personal statement at Interview.
